Northwest FCS helps plow a path for the cure with a pink tractor.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure participants in Spokane were greeted by something new at the finish line this year – a bright pink tractor! As the finish line sponsor for Race for the Cure, Northwest FCS worked with volunteers and donors from across the North Idaho and Eastern Washington region to get the tractor ready in time for its race-day debut.

Northwest FCS Public Relations and Communications Coordinator Jennifer Rohrer says, “We wanted something big to greet finishers. Everyone is affected by cancer, knows someone who has battled the disease or wants to find a cure. This was our way of supporting the cause and putting a smile on the face of more than 10,000 race participants.”

Employees pulled together their contacts and skills to make the pink tractor a reality in less than 30 days, thanks to generous donations of time, products and services.

Northwest FCS customers Chad and Clarence Haeg of Worley, Idaho, donated the old tractor. John Marshall of Landcraft Repair in Ritzville, Washington – who normally paints UPS trucks brown – volunteered to switch his paint to bright pink. Employee volunteers helped sand and prepare the tractor to be painted. All the paint, bolts and a trailer were donated as well.

Every year, Northwest FCS contributes $6,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. It’s a cause that's important to many employees. Ten years ago, Northwest FCS CFO Michal Armstrong lost his battle with breast cancer; several other Northwest FCS employees have fought the battle as well. This year, more than 120 employees and their families from as far away as Salem and Sunnyside joined the Spokane team and sported a black and pink tractor shirt, “Plowing a Path for the Cure.”

Northwest FCS' Pink Tractor

In the spring of 2013, Northwest FCS and AgDirect employees teamed up to create "The Pink Tractor." The Pink Tractor travels throughout the Northwest, raising money for breast cancer awareness and research.

The Moses Lake branch took the Pink Tractor around town in the summer of 2013. The team has been an annual supporter of the Relay for Life event and fundraiser by "flocking" nominated yards with pink flamingos! The team – 28 Farm Credit employees, family and friends – participated in the Relay for Life event, and through their fundraising efforts, contributed nearly $5,000. The team also took the tractor to the Moses Lake Farmers Market for their Customer Appreciation Day. The tractor was also featured at the Swim Across America event to support the Moses Lake Roundup Rodeo queen.
